State Senate to Hold Special Solid Waste Committee July 10&11

Press release from Bring Urban Recycling to Nashville Today

On Tuesday 10 July at 1:30 pm and Wednesday 11 July at 9 am, the Senate Energy and Environment Committee will hold a Special Legislative Committee on Solid Waste and Diversion of waste from landfills in Room 12/14 of the Legislative Plaza. A wide range of witnesses will testify including managers from Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), environmental group BURNT, green recycling busiensses, UT Knoxville, and Southeast Recycling development Council. The Public is invited to attend and make comments on Wednesday morning. The hearing will be live streamed on General Assembly television [see below]

Bruce Wood of BURNT, a scheduled speaker, said “the Committee is looking at how to divert solid waste from landfills by managing it as a raw material for jobs and business. This is a big step–Tennessee needs jobs and we have to stop creating bad landfills”

Wood pointed to the Jackson A-1 Construction Waste Landfill and Camden EWS Landfill as particulalry bad land uses which are not needed [see attached]

The Tennessee Senate Energy and Environment Solid Waste Subcomittee will hold a special hearing on diverting waste from landfills through recycling and composting Tuesday, 10 July 2012 at 1:30 p.m. and Wednesday 11 July at 9:00 a.m. in Room 12/14 of the Legislative Plaza [enter opposite main entrance of TPAC].
